Michael Constantine has organized a memorial for his father, Gus Constantine. The memorial will be at the Holy Trinity Church in New Rochelle, NY on Sunday, May 6, 2007. A reception will be held at the Church at 12:30 with a memorial from 1:00 until 2:00 PM.
Gus was a member of the NISOA National Hall of Fame, a dear friend and mentor to many of us in the New York Metro chapter. Michael has extended an invitation to the chapter and the NISOA family to celebrate and remember Gus’ life and accomplishments.
Thanks to the wonderful staff at C.W. Post University, we will present the annual rules interpretation clinic in Humanities Hall, Room 119 at C.W. Post University on August 25, 2007 at 8:30 AM.
This room is a modern lecture hall with better audio/visual support and comfort.
Date Change due to a schedule conflict at Kings Point!! The US Merchant Marine Academy needs referees for their annual men’s soccer spring 6 v 6 tournament. The tournament runs from 9 AM until approximately 4 PM on Saturday, April 21. Get more information on the message board.
The NISOA Executive Council has approved a new referee badge (or patch, if you prefer). This badge is to be worn by all officials (except for NISOA National Referees) for all intercollegiate competitions unless otherwise specified by the governing sports authority, effective immediately. NISOA is distributing the badges by mail. We plan on ordering additional badges for member purchase before the annual rules interpretation meeting.
We hope you enjoy the instructional articles on a variety of officiating topics in the Clinicians’ Corner. These articles are intended to provide you with additional insight and techniques to improve your skills.
I was doing some research for an article I’m writing and I came across this great blog from NISOA National Instructor, Bob Evans. Worth a read.
For the Integrity of Soccer
Our constitution requires us to hold the mandatory annual rules meeting on the fourth Saturday of August. The Executive Board has discussed moving the mandatory annual rules meeting for the following reasons:
- Competitive games are scheduled as early as August 20th. Scrimmages (with officials) start in mid-August.
- The last weekend in August is a popular family vacation time.
Traditionally, the college soccer season didn’t start until Labor Day. Rule changes were presented and discussed well in advance of the first games of the season. With many institutions starting their season in August, our rules clinic is presented too late.
Since the rule changes and new rule books are not distributed until June, the mandatory rules meeting can not occur before July. The second Saturday in August is a potential date for the mandatory rules meeting.
Changing the meeting date will require an amendment to the constitution so the 2007 meeting schedule remains unchanged.
Recently, the NCAA announced they will enact rule changes on a two-year cycle. It’s not clear when they will begin this procedure for soccer but this new procedure will alter the content (and duration) of the mandatory meeting. We could have the mandatory initial meeting on a weeknight when the NCAA rules do not change.
If you have any suggestions, recommended dates or opinions on this issue, please share them with us here. We want to hear from you. Thanks.
