Business Meeting Location

During the past couple of years, we’ve been meeting at the Knights of Columbus hall in New Hyde Park. The hall is a good size for us with a central location. However, we don’t get a lot of availability from them due to other events they host. Our chapter meetings are generally restricted to Mondays and Wednesdays. Wednesday is traditionally the busiest day for college games during the week. Given a choice, we prefer not to schedule meetings on Wednesday.

If anyone has access to a suitable venue to host our 4 chapter business meetings, please let us know. We would like to have options for 2008 and beyond. The criteria we want are:

  1. Ability to seat at least 50 members.
  2. Centrally located. Western Nassau County or Eastern Queens is best.
  3. Ample, onsite and free parking.

Thanks for your help.

A Message From NISOA

The Executive Board received the following message from NISOA:

The NISOA Foundation Fund offers grant scholarships for its members to attend the NISOA soccer referee training camp each summer. In an effort to raise funds for these scholarships, NISOA has formed a partnership with iGive.com. NISOA invites you to change your online shopping into support for a truly worthy cause. As you can see, when you sign up by Jan. 31 and make an online purchase within 45 days, NISOA gets an automatic $5.00. This does not cost you a dime! Please support the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA) by shopping online for brand-name merchandise at over 676 well-known online stores.

How it works :
1. Join to Support National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association. It’s free, private, & easy. Register at www.iGive.com/nisoa.
2. Shop the Mall at www.iGive.com/nisoa. You’ll see familiar stores like Lands’ End, Office Depot, JCPenney, Neiman Marcus, Expedia, Barnes & Noble, and eBay to mention just a few!

New NY Metro ISOA Chapter Golf Shirts

Chapter Golf ShirtLou Minutoli has done it again!! The NY Metro ISOA Chapter Golf Shirts are available in limited quantities based on the input we received from our survey last fall. The shirts are very high quality and look terrific. Click on the photo for a more detailed image. If you responded positively to the survey, you should have received an email with more details about availability.

Production will end this summer. Shirts will be distributed (to those who purchase them, obviously) at the annual clinic in August, 2007. This will be the one and only opportunity to get this shirt. Once production is done, that’s it!!

Arnold Klein selected as the 2007 NISOA Region 2 Referee of the Year

Congratulations to Arnold Klein of Atlantic Beach, NY who was selected as the 2007 NISOA Region 2 Referee of the Year. Arnold KleinThis prestigious award is given to a NISOA referee in Region 2 (which consists of all NISOA chapters in New York State) who demonstrates professionalism on and off the field, shows fairness and a high degree of integrity is willing to help other officials to succeed.

Arnold joined the NY Metro chapter in 1989 after a very successful officiating career in his native Czechoslovakia. He attained USSF National Referee status that year officiating youth and professional championship matches as well as international matches here in the United States. He has officiated over 25 NCAA and NJCAA playoff games during his impressive career. He is routinely selected for important high-level intercollegiate matches and always performs in an exemplary manner.

Arnold is truly a positive role model and more than worthy of this recognition. His work on and off the field reflects great credit on our chapter. We are proud to have him among us.

Passing the NISOA Fitness Test

In 2003, NISOA completely revised the events in their physical performance test. The new events, 12 minute run, “The Pro-40 Test”, “Brazilian AR 50 meter test” and “The 30 meter shuffle” were developed based on the findings of leading researchers in the field of Soccer Referee Physiology. New scoring criteria were developed. In 2005, NISOA revised their policy to require renewing members to pass the fitness test with a minimum average score of 1.0 for the 4 individual events to maintain their member “in good standing” status. A full description of the policy, fitness tests and scoring criteria is available here.

The current NISOA policy as well as the current terms of our constitution allows the chapter (at its discretion) to place a renewing member who does not pass the fitness test under probation and assigned a game as an official for assessment purposes. This provision works well where there is a traditional NISOA Chapter Assignor. However, the NY Metro Chapter does not have a chapter assignor. Games are assigned exclusively by conference assignors such as ECAC, ISOAB, Atlantic 10, and Region XV. The chapter’s executive board cannot ensure members who fail the fitness test will have an opportunity to be assigned a game for assessment purposes. It’s a Catch 22. Read the rest of this article »
